WHAT IS
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and fascia to release chronic tension and trigger points. It uses slow, firm pressure and deep strokes – incorporating knuckles, forearms and elbows – to break down adhesions or trigger points (commonly known as knots) and scar tissue. It's great for improving the range of movement, muscle soreness, stiffness, postural issues and helping with injury recovery.
I trained in deep tissue massage at the Cotswold Academy. The course is accredited by FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapies) – the largest professional body for complementary, beauty and sports therapists.
How is a deep tissue massage different from a holistic massage?
A deep tissue massage targets muscle structure and function, while holistic massage mainly boosts circulation, relaxation and eases superficial muscles. The pressure with a holistic massage is light to medium, whereas with a deep tissue massage it's firm to deep. A holistic massage helps with stress release and relaxation whereas a deep tissue focuses more on chronic pain, knots and tension.
What is a trigger point?
A trigger point or adhesion is a small area of hypersensitivity in a muscle caused by overstrain. Similar to a snag in knitwear, the muscle fibres stay contracted and cannot relax. The build up of lactic acid and lack of blood flow and nutrients to these areas causes pain, fatigue and weakness. Trigger points can also create referral pain – that's pain, tingling or numbness in other areas of the body.
Should deep tissue massage hurt?
No. There's a myth that deep tissue massage has to be painful to be effective. But this just isn't true. Aggressive deep tissue massage techniques can actually damage muscle. The goal is to release muscle fibres, not force them – so pain should never be excessive.
